From how it all started to the present day
Kees van der Meijden is the founder and director of Van der Meijden Machines: My entire life I’ve loved technology in every shape and size. I’d like to tell you where that love came from.
Lego, tree huts and motorised carts
I spent my youth at the farm of my parents and I became fascinated with tractors and machines at a young age. I played with Lego a lot, sometimes I took apart a radio, alarm clock or vacuum cleaner, and I made tree huts. A few years later I revised, boosted and modified every scooter, motor and car I could get my hands on. Another big passion of mine was building my own motorised carts.
Experience with stainless steel and dairy
After completing my technical studies, I worked as a drawer-designer of tools and lift systems for the handicapped and elderly. These machines were made of stainless steel, which made me quite adept at handling the material. After four beautiful years I transferred towards the dairy industry. At that point my parents had a successful farm/dairy factory, “De Zwaluw”, with a large range of mainly organic dairy products. My dad asked me if it would be something for me, and because I couldn’t think of a reason not to, I started working at my parents’ company, hoping to one day take it over.
Technology kept pulling on me
I quickly learnt to make artisanal cheese, butter, yogurt, quark, and other products, as well as what machines I needed for that. In no time I went to work on the factory. Processes and actions were mechanised and automated and capacities were increased. This led to a further growth and development of the dairy business. But after three years I realised that the technological side was more interesting to me than the dairy side. I decided to start as an independent entrepreneur in the machine construction and reparation industry.
Van der Meijden Machines
On the 1st of July, 1993, Van der Meijden Machines was born. My first customer was my parents’ dairy business, which was eventually taken over by my younger sister. It didn’t take long for other small milk processing companies from the area to come to me and ask for my services and machines. My new company started to develop and grow. One special position in my company was – and still is – reserved for my technical right hand, Gerard Moorman. Back in the day Gerard was a maintenance engineer at the dairy company. He decided to start working for me when I started my business, and together with Gerard I pioneered the first few years, thinking up and building machines and entire plants together, mainly out of used machines and parts.
In 1997 we moved to our new premises on the Kreitermolen business park in Udenhout. During that time the company consisted of Gerard and me, as well as a second engineer and an intern. It wasn’t long before we were swamped: as soon as we moved to the business park there were many new customers, from as many industries, who all needed our services. We picked up new disciplines enthusiastically, such as CAD drawing and PLC operations.
Van der Meijden Machines today
The workshop covers more than 850 square metres, the office covers 250 square metres and we have more than 15 employees. I am very proud of each and every one of them: they all have their own unique specialisations and talents, they only share their unbridled commitment and loyalty. I’m proud to say that Van der Meijden Machines has been able to develop into the modern, professional organisation we are now, in part thanks to them!
